Netflix Wins ‘Arrested Development’

Posted on November 21, 2011 |

arrested development netflix Netflix Wins ‘Arrested Development’

There's always money in the banana stand…

When Mitch Hurwitz told the world that yes, Arrested Development would return to TV before hitting the big screen, he set off an endless number of rumors about when the show would premiere, where it’d do so, what it’d be about and which cast members would return.

A few of those questions were answered this weekend when Netflix beat Showtime in a bidding war; the online streaming site will debut the hugely anticipated return of the series in 2013. The short season will include either nine or ten episodes and each one will focus on a different member of the dysfunctional Bluth family.  Over the years, the whole cast has expressed interest in a film, so it’s expected that they’ll all return for the series, too.

Brian Grazer told Deadline, “Bringing a series back from cancellation almost never happens, but then, Arrested always was about as unconventional as they get, so it seems totally appropriate that this show that broke the mold is smashing it to pieces once again.”

Margiela Goes to Nascar

Posted on November 21, 2011 |

Michelle Obama spent her Sunday taking in a Nascar race in Miami.

The world of car racing could use some good publicity after the tragic death of racer Dan Wheldon in Las Vegas last month, but yesterday’s crowd wasn’t thrilled to see the First Lady take the podium.  Instead, they booed her and Jill Biden when the two took time to promote Joining Forces, a program bent on training and hiring veterans.

They may have booed even louder if they’d known Obama was wearing Margiela.  We’re guessing that’s the closest a Margiela product has ever gotten to a racetrack.  Not surprisingly, the unexpected choice has made the fashion crowd love the First Lady even more.

Kate Bolick Swears “All the Single Ladies” Won’t Be Another SATC

Posted on November 21, 2011 |

kate bolick Kate Bolick Swears “All the Single Ladies” Won’t Be Another SATC

Kate Bolick on the cover of The Atlantic for "All the Single Ladies."

When Kate Bolick’s Atlantic magazine cover story, “All the Single Ladies,” hit newstands last month, it caused a media maelstrom. Some rallied behind Bolick’s case for single-dom, while others disputed everything from her facts to the personal way in which she presented them to her appearing on the magazine’s cover. Just a few weeks later, when news of a TV series rooted in Bolick’s piece was announced, Sex and the City comparisons were inevitable.

Though the series won’t materialize on the small screen for at least a year—and development is in its infancy—the idea that it’d become yet another SATC wannabe like Lipstick Jungle or Cashere Mafia, thus relegating Bolick and her cutting-edge piece back to the “dating-obsessed shoe shopper” she mocked, is terrifying to the legions of women boosted by her well researched article.

Thankfully, the development team, which includes Drop Dead Diva’s Josh Berman, plans on keeping Bolick close (she’s signed on as a consultant) and is well aware of the Carrie Bradshaw trap. “Writers are always trying to develop the next Sex and the City, but the problem is it just feels like pale imitations of Sex and the City. To me, [Kate’s] insight into modern day womanhood and relationships takes Sex and the City to the next level,” said Berman.

Berman hasn’t decided if the protagonist will be named Kate, or how much she’ll actually resemble Bolick, but he does know that not all of the characters “will share Kate’s point of view. There will absolutely be conflict between the traditional romanticist versus someone like Kate… That’s part of the fun of the show is the conflict between two different ways of thinking—both among successful women.”

“At the end of the day, Mr. Big bought Carrie a big closet and it was ‘happily ever after,’” Berman said. “The point of [Kate’s] story is that a woman should be buying her own damn closet.”

“For men, it’s about growing up, becoming the man they want to be and that’s when they’ll win the awesome woman,” Bolick says, pointing out that she has to look to Depression era films to find heroic female characters “because there was more range of how women were shown and more of that kind of banter back and forth—a different sense of play between the sexes.” All things Bolick would like the series based on her essay to emulate.

Though the project remains untitled, they seem to have a good start. Bolick chose Berman because she “really likes how [he] thinks about women and takes this stuff really seriously, but puts it in a comic package.”

The admiration is mutual. Berman said, “What I love about Kate is she actually explains how, for the first time in history, it’s actually more beneficial for a man on an economic level to be married than a woman, and I had never thought that through.”

As for how much of Bolick’s complex and diverse piece will make the final cut? Berman said, “I hope that every drop of that article makes it into the series.”

Madonna’s New Love Story

Andrea Riseborough as Wallis Simpson in W.E.

Like anything Madonna does, her new film W.E. has been subject to controversy since its inception. The movie, which parallels the scandalous relationship between England’s Crown Prince Edward and the American Wallis Simpson with a contemporary love story, has already received mixed reviews at film festivals and screenings since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival this fall. But, again like anything Madonna does, the film looks great. The Weinstein Company’s released the first official trailer, just two weeks before the film opens on December 9th. Valentino’s Digital Museum

A look inside Valentino’s new digital museum.

Valentino, the man, not the brand, has just announced his newest project: the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum.

The app, which one can download onto a computer, tablet or phone, offers an intimate look at Valentino’s archives. Nearly 5,000 images spanning almost 50 years show dresses, sketches, photographs and videos of 95 fashion shows. The app is designed to make you feel like you’re walking through a proper museum exhibition, with 3D technology and a sky above your head.  The looks are grouped together by occasion. In one corner, for example, is the black and white gown in which Julia Roberts won the Oscar set against Valentino’s orginal sketch and next to a photo of Roberts wearing the dress.

Videos of Valentino and his partner, Giancarlo Giacometti pop up in corners of the museum as well as galleries full of Valentino Red and a look back at the epic events the designer threw over the years. Click through to watch a preview of the app, which will launch on December 5th with a press conference in New York City.
