Magda Berliner Launches Lace Collection with Shopbop
Posted on May 31, 2012 |
Magda Berliner’s dresses and skirts made from collages of vintage white lace have earned her a cult following, but the one-of-a-kind pieces can be hard to find. “A kind of indie fan club developed after Ashley Olsen wore one of my lace dresses six years ago,” Berliner told the Los Angeles Times. “I was getting emails from young girls who wanted the same dress, but I had to explain that each dress was one-of-a-kind and had to be custom made.”
Shopbop is making the process a little easier: the online retailer has collaborated with Berliner on a three-piece capsule—two dresses and a skirt. Although the silhouettes have been standardized, they’re still hand-assembled, and the vintage lace still varies from piece to piece. “I have dresses made from the edges of tablecloths, runners, tea towels and pillow cases,” Berliner noted. “Some of the lace pieces have been handed down, so you will see initials or letters of the alphabet or animal themes if they were made for children.”
Cartier Launches a New Tank Watch
Posted on May 31, 2012 |
Since its debut in 1917, the Cartier Tank watch has garnered a divergent group of fans, from Grace Kelly to Andy Warhol to Michelle Obama. Over the years, the brand has introduced variations on the iconic timepiece, including the Tank Américaine in 1989 and the Tank Française in 1996, odes to the New York and Paris Cartier boutiques, respectively.
This year, a new city is paid tribute: London. The newly-introduced Tank Anglaise rounds out the trifecta of watches named to honor Cartier’s three flagship boutiques, and comes in rose, yellow or white gold, and a version set all over with brilliant-cut diamonds. British model and girl-about-town Poppy Delevingne has been named its ambassador and was photographed with her father by David Bailey to celebrate the new design, which launches in Cartier stores and online June 22.
Veronica Etro Waxes Poetic on Paisley
Posted on May 31, 2012 |
Last night, Veronica Etro made her first trip to New York in over seven years—to fete the new Etro shop-in-shop that’s just opened inside Saks Fifth Avenue’s New York flagship. The new outpost is Etro’s third independent retail outlet in New York City. “It’s a huge opportunity, Saks is like a family—we’ve been working together forever,” Veronica Etro said.
Paisley, a key part of Etro’s brand identity, makes a strong statement in the store; in fact, the floor is anchored by a signature orange and fuchsia Berber rug. “The brand began with paisleys in the ’70s, it’s part of our heritage, and it was people like David Bowie and Mick Jagger who wore it,” Etro said of the print, which she defines as “eccentric, exotic and erotic.”
The paisley formula seems to be working: Etro just had their biggest season at Saks, with a spring collection full of prints. ”This is what women want—emotional, colorful and feminine clothes,” explained Saks president Ron Frasch. “You look at this and it brings a smile to your face. Women like buying things that make them happy.” Etro had equal admiration for Saks: “It’s the epitome of Fifth Avenue retail!”
Steve Madden: Mary-Kate and Ashley are ‘Winners’

Last night’s soiree for Superga’s newly minted creative directors, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, was a different kind of fashion party. Despite the savory samplings, bumping beats (courtesy of Harley Viera-Newton) and top tier tipples, the crowd at The Crosby Hotel was a little less statuesque than usual—and a helluva lot more comfortable!
Known for quirky sartorial choices and a love affair with high heels, reveler Leandra Medine rocked a gold pair of the chubby-soled sneaks, neatly tied around her ankles. “I have this weird thing about shoes being tied normally,” she confessed. “The bunny ear loops are kind of weird, right?” And when it comes to wearing her gilded pair all summer long, Medine has big plans. “I’ll wear them with an airy, loose, tentish dress or denim cutoffs with a long-sleeve, silk t-shirt.” Dannijo designer Danielle Snyder agreed that the sneakers perfectly anchor girlish looks. “I like to be a little bit feminine, but a little bit tomboyish,” she explained to ELLE. ” Supergas are great for that.”

Clairvoyant when it comes to style, Mary-Kate and Ashley knew the brand’s North American domination was only a matter of time. “It’s always been a brand that we loved,” enthused Ashley. “It’s been around for years, but just hasn’t been distributed to the U.S. in a really great way.” MK agreed: “It made sense for the collaboration with The Row because Superga is simple, modern, and classic.”
Of course, another celebration may be in order. The designers, alongside Proenza Schouler, are nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year for The Row at the June 4 CFDA Awards. “We’re just really happy to be involved in this industry. And I think you just see a lot of the hard work that goes on every single day,” Ashley said of the distinction.
Put simply, “they’re winners,” gushed Steve Madden. “And it’s good to be with a winner.” The trio’s footwear collaborations, which include the successful Elizabeth and James range, have afforded him not only success, but the opportunity to learn from the indomitable duo. “We have shoes at Neiman Marcus. We have shoes at JCPenney and at Bergdorf Goodman. They are one of the few people that can do all that. I mean, Steve Madden is not in all those places!” But more than their marketing prowess, Madden’s most impressed with the pair’s commitment to punctuality. “They always show up on time!” he exclaimed. “I’m always shocked by that because celebrities never show up on time. I’m lucky to be able to work with them.”
Karl Lagerfeld’s New Tees Feature His Face and Hands
Posted on May 31, 2012 |
Karl Lagerfeld’s latest collaboration? A set of four limited-edition t-shirts produced with the East London-based design boutique I Love Dust. The tees are very self-referential, depicting Karl’s name in various fonts, a trompe l’oeil image of his signature tie and jacket, a fingerless-gloved hand, and his portrait formed by Lagerfeld quotes like, “Vanity is the most healthiest thing in life” and “Chic is a kind of mayonnaise, either it tastes or it doesn’t.”
An offshoot of Karl’s new contemporary line, the tees are available for $95 starting today on Karl.com and at Colette in Paris and the Karl pop-up store in Manhattan (located at 375 Bleecker Street through August, open Monday through Saturday, 11 am to 7 pm, and Sunday, noon to 7 pm).

10 Questions: Leslie Fremar
Posted on May 31, 2012 |
Let’s break it down. Stylist Leslie Fremar was born in Canada, began her career as a fashion assistant, climbed the ranks and eventually became associate fashion editor, moved on to become the Director of VIP Relations at Prada, established herself as one of the industry’s most coveted celebrity stylists—and the rest is history. Today, her current client list includes sartorial icons like Jennifer Connelly, Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron, and Reese Witherspoon, and she’s about to debut her second collection in collaboration with Fruit of the Loom. Her luxe range consists of tees, sweaters, leggings, and dresses that start at $8 and will be sold at every single Bloomingdale’s store around the country beginning in June. She’s epitomized the concept of “high-low,” and as we anxiously wait for her collab to hit shelves—we spoke with Fremar and found out why she deems her “pregnant dreams” too crazy to share.
ELLE: What is your favorite smell?
Fremar: I love the smell of rosemary. There is nothing like fresh rosemary in a garden.
ELLE: What do you consider the epitome of happiness?
LF: When my son cracks up laughing. When he is happy, I am happy, and nothing else matters.
ELLE: How do you define luxury?
LF: To me, luxury is something really well-made. It can be clothing, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be anything really, as long as it is made with expertise and time.
ELLE: What is the last dream you remember?
LF: Well, I am pregnant, and I think when you are pregnant, or at least for me, you have crazy dreams. If I shared them with you, you may think I am crazy.
ELLE: What’s your favorite childhood memory?
LF: Growing up in Canada, going to summer camp was a huge thing. As a 10-year-old kid, going away for two months in the summer was pretty fun and getting handwritten letters from your parents was very special. If I had known handwritten letters were going to be a thing of the past, I would have kept them all.
ELLE: What’s the last book you read and loved?
LF: Sadly, the last book I read is called When Pigasso Met Mootisse. My son loved it.
ELLE: Describe your home’s aesthetic.
LF: I love my apartment. I put so much time into decorating it because I want my son to have a home. It is very warm and comfortable, but it has a strong point of view. He needs to know his mom takes aesthetic very seriously.
ELLE: What are your vices?
LF: Chocolate, pizza, french fries, and cheese.
ELLE: Describe yourself in five words or less.
LF: I am very conservative, serious, controlling and decisive. Somehow I still have friends.
ELLE: What possession will you never throw away?
LF: All “things” are disposable to me.
Nature Girls: A Perfect Wardrobe Looksie
Posted on May 31, 2012 |
Last night, I begged one of my two SL besties into taking pics with me. Mind you, co-blogs take us hours (I blame crashing and being too fat for couples poses!) but I love posing with my bishes so much I just have to plead until one of them caves in! My little flower child, Kimbra, loved the nature round of Perfect Wardrobe so much that we decided to show off some goodies from it. I admit there is lots of cuteness to be had as well so we got all hippiefied and snuck onto my other bestie, Dina’s, beautiful SIM to take some pics.Enjoy our looks and get to Perfect Wardrobe!
*Giggles* We are both wearing the same skin but we wear it so differently. It’s Delusional by Izzie’s and it’s available at the Skin Addiction Showcase. I love the soft, dewy face and sunkissed glow of this little baby so much and it comes with lots of extras like lipglosses, eyeshadows, brow colors and freckles. As you can see Delusional looks beautiful on both of us so hurry on over and snatch her up.

The Devil Wears Prada Getting a Sequel
Posted on May 31, 2012 |
Ten years after The Devil Wears Prada was published, author Lauren Weisberger will be debuting its sequel, Entertainment Weekly reports. Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, as the book is called, will hit shelves in April 2013; surely a movie sequel won’t be far behind.
The novel still centers around Andrea “Andy” Sachs, but picks up eight years later. Instead of working for fashion editor Miranda Priestly at Runway magazine, Andy is now editing The Plunge, the hottest bridal magazine around, alongside Emily, her former Runway nemesis-turned-best friend. She’s also planning a wedding to Max, her handsome media scion fiance. But all is not well: Andy remains haunted by her former boss—they ended on bad terms, and the magazine world is small, after all.
