Dev is a true product of the Internet age: A friend posted the now-22-year-old’s cover of an Amy Winehouse song on MySpace, and next thing you know, she’s being sampled by Far East Movement and dueting with Enrique Iglesias. Her online domination continues—the music video for “Bass Down Low” has hit 37 million views on YouTube (and counting)—but it’s not just in the virtual world where the California born-and-raised performer has found success; her debut album, The Night the Sun Came Up, topped charts around the world, and now Dev (nee Devin Star Tailes) is bringing her unique electro-pop blend across the US with a coast-to-coast tour. We know that she likes her beats fast and her bass down low, but what is she into when it comes to clothing? ELLE.com spoke with the singer to get the scoop.
Outfit breakdown: My top and shorts are from Forever 21, the jacket is from Virgo LA, and the shoes are Jeffrey Campbell.
My personal style is: feminine with a touch of masculine for a bad-ass edge.
In my suitcase: I’ll probably bring about 10 to 15 outfits I can rotate, depending on how long I’m on tour. If I’m on tour for four days, I’ll probably only bring three.
I always pack: Topstick—to tape the boobs.
You’d never catch me onstage wearing: a thong by itself. Under something is cool, but not by itself. That’s whack.
My pre-tour shopping spot is: Hellz Bellz. Before I go on the road I usually hit it up for all my gear.
The best on-the-road purchase I ever made was: in Phoenix at a vintage shop. I found a vintage Chanel belt that I love and wear with everything—jeans, dresses, T-shirts. That, and at the Goodwill I found a long, down to my ankles denim dress that’s really hot.
