Although she’s opened for Snoop Dogg and Ludacris, performed on late night TV, and released a handful of mixtapes and EPs, nothing gets San Francisco-based rapper K.Flay excited like a pair of Nike high-tops. While touring this spring, the Stanford graduate (real name: Kristine Flaherty) made extra room in her suitcase to bring along some kicks. The one downside? It limits what else she can pack. “I recycle outfits like crazy, since I don’t have that many clothes—I’m a clothing-on-repeat kind of girl,” she admits.
Having already announced dates at some of the biggest summer music festivals (think Bonnaroo and the Governor’s Ball), K.Flay gave ELLE.com a sneak peek at what to expect the next time she hits the road, with a snapshot from her most recent tour.
Outfit breakdown: Wildfox Couture T-shirt, Lacoste sweater, Just USA jeans—my old jeans got ripped on the last tour, so I wandered into a store in Oakland and found these—Nike Terminator sneakers, Nixon watch.
I brought this outfit on tour because: one, it is amazing to find a shirt that says “Midnight Snack,” and two, it facilitates head-banging.
My personal style is: casual but distinctive. I’ve got a few pieces—mainly cardigans and hoodies—that I wear all the time, and then a huge stack of T-shirts I find in random cities. I’ve always been understated in the way I dress, and that translates to my stage style too.
If this outfit were one of my songs, it would be: “10th Ave,” the first track off my new EP Eyes Shut. The song is basically about how I roll suitcases all over New York City, acting like a semi-competent weirdo.
I always pack: shoes! I’m obsessed with Nikes, particularly high-top dunks. So I always make room for a diverse gaggle of footwear.
You’d never catch me onstage wearing: a bikini.
My pre-tour shopping stop is: Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn. It’s a vintage shop with tons of hidden gems.
The best on-the-road purchase I ever made was: these crazy blue Nike Delta Forces for like $25 the last time I was in Phoenix. It pretty much made my week.
