Daft Punk Shot by Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent
Posted on April 17, 2013 |
There’s been so much build-up to the release (May 21) of Daft Punk’s fourth album, Random Access Memories, it’s fascinating to see how they keep pulling one more rabbit out of their hat. Or helmet, as it were. As if launching the album at a random country fair in Australia or getting Giorgio Moroder on camera didn’t fully pique your interest, now comes word that the duo has been photographed by Hedi Slimane’s wearing a black glitter Le Smoking jacket and other custom pieces by Saint Laurent.
Slimane’s trademark black-and-white shots—the latest in the Saint Laurent Music Project series, which also saw Marilyn Manson, Courtney Love, Kim Gordon, and Ariel Pink photographed—follow their involvement with the label at Slimane’s debut outing in October of last year.

Happy 23rd, Emma Watson!

Posted on April 17, 2013 |
Sunning and luxuriating in the SoCal desert, occasionally dancing spastically to live acts by their favorite bands, the beautiful people were made for a music festival like Coachella. This is their domain. They came, they saw, they tweeted…

Posted on April 17, 2013 |
You’ll be relieved to know that Gotham has one less pube stalker roaming the streets. Last night a disturbed woman approached Hugh Jackman while he worked out at Gotham Gym and flung an electric razor full of pubes at him that she pulled from her waistband. According to the Post, “She was screaming ‘I love you!’ as a staffer dragged her away from the star.” She’s been arrested and identified as 47-year-old Kathleen Thurston.
While slightly funny, Jackman later said he had seen the woman outside his West Willage home and his children’s school, which makes the incident quite alarming, too. “Here’s a woman who obviously needs help,” he said. “So I just hope she gets the help she needs.” Leave it to Jackman to stay calm about the close shave.

Posted on April 17, 2013 |
We’re all for proving naysayers wrong. Check out Crystal Renn in the look book for Rad Hourani’s Unisex collection #7. Not bad for a model formerly known as “plus-sized” and who wrote a book on her struggle with weight. We might note that Hourani makes strictly curve-less, straight-lined clothes, so whatever she’s doing, it’s working.

Posted on April 17, 2013 |
The official selection of the Cannes Film Festival next month has yet to be announced, but word has come of at least one fashionable entry, the Carine Roitfeld documentary. (The Great Gatsby opens Cannes, but more on that later.) It was almost a year ago that we first heard about Mademoiselle C, a title that may lead you to think it’s about the Mademoiselle C, Coco Chanel. But no.
The director, Fabien Constant, says that the finished product will be like The September Issue, which the doc’s production company also happened to work on. It follows the creation of Roitfeld’s first issue of her magazine CR Fashion Book, which was inspired by her daughter’s first pregnancy. “[The film] coincided with Julia’s pregnancy and suddenly it gave her a new perspective on things. The idea of birth, renewal in CR is linked to what she was experiencing,” Constant told Fashionista.com. “It is about her arrival in New York, which was a brand new start for her.”
As reported, plenty of her famous fashion friends make appearances, including Karl Lagerfeld, Riccardo Tisci, Albert Elbaz, Jean Paul Gaultier, Cate Blanchett, Diane Von Furstenberg, Mario Sorrenti, Natalia Vodianova, Alexander Wang, Donatella Versace, Mario Testino, and Tom Ford. Also making cameos in the documentary are fashion-orbiting celebs from Cate Blanchett to Kanye West, who apparently spends his screen time chatting up models.
Cannes Festival non-goers can catch Mademoiselle C in September, when it arrives in select theaters.
Category: Elle fashionVideo Fix: Romeo & Juliet Trailer with Hailee Steinfeld
Posted on April 17, 2013 |
It’s a little cringe-y. But Shakespeare’s story of Romeo & Juliet is, by its very nature, a little cringe-y. And that’s what makes it a classic, lending its timeless, love-conquers-all message to raconteurs through the ages. In the current age, the prevailing style is vampiric, brooding, and melodramatic, so we’re treated to the look and feel of Twilight. (Plus, it was adapted for the screen by Julian Fellowes, the less-than-subtle creator of Downton Abbey.) But Hailee Steinfeld is a vision as Juliet, and Douglas Booth as Romeo ain’t too shabby either. Ed Westwick is also in there, apparently…

Posted on April 17, 2013 |
When they met as interns at Alexander McQueen, Agape Mdumulla and Sam Cotton couldn’t have known that they would soon join forces and strike out on their own as the dandyish men’s label Agi & Sam. Five years later, this past February, they brought the house down when they showed their fall ’13 collection as part of MAN, the group show and sponsorship platform created between Topman and Fashion East. They had a trick up their sleeve, sending a basset hound down the runway in a whimsical nod to hunting and other traditionally British men’s pursuits.
Humor is the duo’s calling card, seen in elaborate prints and patterns that are not as they first appear. Look closely and you may spot a camel, a pheasant, a fox, or a dog among the busy plaids and paisleys. Calling to mind other English men’s designers, most notably Paul Smith, the house that Agi & Sam built goes to show that not every cutting-edge London label is fashioned out of balloons, safety pins, or bits of driftwood.
Agi & Sam’s fall ’13 collection will be carried by oki-ni.

Posted on April 17, 2013 |
Living up to the name of their new album, Random Access Memories, Daft Punk have decided to pre-release it at a country fair. Not just any country fair, but the Wee Waa Show in Wee Waa, Australia, which happens to be the cotton capital of the island nation. So, among the “pet show, showgirl competition, cross cut saw competition, and fireworks,” according to Wee Waa’s website, 4,000 people from the area will be treated to a playback of the album on May 17. The rest of the world will have to wait until May 21, the official release date.
In the meantime, following a similar video with disco legend Giorgio Moroder, here’s Todd Edwards talking about his part in the making of the album…
