They say inspiration can come from anywhere, and for Dee Ocleppo, Tommy Hilfiger’s blonde better half, it was her favorite bag from seventh grade: “I was obsessed with this bag in seventh grade, and I wanted to make a grown-up version.”
The result is a line of four bag shapes she designed to be sold on HSN that transform with various patterned fabric covers. “Once you have the frame [bag], that can carry you into spring and fall and winter because you can change the covers to fit the season.” The styles are based on the couples’ favorite locations around the world, from The Plaza clutch (referring to their apartment in the building, where they invited press to preview the bags on their dining room table), to the Greenwich satchel, the Monaco tote, and the Mustique chain bag.
“I didn’t really plan on getting into the design business because we have enough of those in the family,” Dee admitted. But in a family full of designers, you have the advantage of getting some real business advice. “We knew we couldn’t put these on the floor at a department store because people have to be shown how they work and the transforming abilities,” explained Tommy. “HSN made sense as a platform to demonstrate the layers of these bags.” The other advantage of selling on HSN is keeping the price point reasonable. DEESIGNS ranges from $99 to $249 for the bags, and $30 to $50 for the covers.
Tune into HSN and HSN.com for the launch of DEESIGNS on March 22.
