Florence Welch has had no shortage of famous collaborators: she’s contributed vocals to a David Byrne album, performed for Karl Lagerfeld & Co. at Chanel’s spring 2012 show, and wore custom-designed Gucci during her tour this past summer. But for her latest project, Secret 7”, the flame-haired singer is looking for sheer talent, rather than a big name, to help her out. The challenge is as follows: With the upcoming release of Florence + The Machine’s single “Only For The Night,” the band is looking for a vinyl sleeve cover design. Anyone can enter the contest—all it takes is coming up with an original idea for a 7” sleeve and submitting it before January 9.
Even better, after voting—which runs from January 10 to January 16—the top 45 designs will all be deemed winners. All 45 covers will be on display at London’s Idea Generation Gallery, and on Record Store Day (April 21) they’ll all be up for grabs, with profits going to the Teenage Cancer Trust. If your design is picked, you’ll not only get the added exposure (just look at the press Florence’s performance got for Chanel in October), but also a signed copy of your cover.
She’s not alone with this contest: The Cure, DJ Shadow, Ben Howard, CSS, Noah and the Whale, and Bombay Bicycle Club all have similar contests running. That almost gives aspiring artists a better chance at nabbing a vinyl record cover than being asked to fill in for Dido at the Academy Awards.
