Rodarte has been commissioned to design the costumes for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
The Philharmonic’s announced plans to produce three of the composer’s most famous operas—Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutti—over three years. The story of the Spanish nobelman will come first, making its debut in the Walt Disney Concert Hall this May. Frank Gehry, who designed the hall ten years ago, will design the sets while the Mulleavy sisters manage the clothes. It’s their first costume work since 2010′s Black Swan, and quite a different project.
In a release, Kate and Laura said, “Opera has always been a part of us; our grandmother was from Rome and studied it as a young girl. To be a part of the legacy of Don Giovanni is an amazing opportunity. Not surprisingly, they’re psyched to work with Gehry, too. “Frank Gehry is an incredible artist and brilliant innovator whose unparalleled vision has redefined the modern landscape…Working with [him] is a dream.”
Gehry heaped high praise on the fashion designers, saying, “Kate and Laura’s work reminds me of my early days—it is free and fearless and not precious.” Who knew an opera would be the most highly anticipated fashion event of the spring?
