Before dreaming up a wacky thing called street style photography, Bill Cunningham was a milliner. As mentioned in last year’s hit documentary, Bill Cunningham New York, even Marilyn Monroe once stopped by his Carnegie Hall studio to try on one of his fantastical creations, sold under the label William J.
Now, nearly 60 years after Cunningham made his last hat, a selection of 23 will go on sale on 1stDibs on Wednesday. A friend of Cunningham’s, Alison Shacter, had an aunt who collected the toppers and is finally ready to part with them. And next week, Cunningham will be honored at Carnegie Hall’s Medal of Excellence gala. Can’t wait to see which lucky guest will walk the red carpet wearing William J.
