When Jay-Z sampled a song from Annie for his single “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” in 1998, it became the biggest hit of his career to date. Now comes news that he’s returning to the musical—in a different capacity.
Emma Thompson is writing and Will Smith is producing a new film version of Annie, set in modern-day New York, Spin reports—with Jay-Z in charge of music. He’ll write a selection of new tracks for the musical, Thompson told the BBC: “Some songs nobody liked, so I ditched them.”
The iconic “Tomorrow” wasn’t among the songs axed, Thompson confirmed: “That’s in, weirdly.” The musical is currently set to film in 2013 and star Smith’s 11-year-old daughter Willow.
