Celebrity stylist June Ambrose has dressed Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and Jay-Z for red carpet appearances, but on her new reality show, Styled by June, she takes sartorially-struggling celebrities (Mischa Barton, Da Brat, and even Family Matters‘ Jaleel White) and revamps their looks. We ask the fashion loudmouth to tell us more about her stylish new show, which just premiered last night on VH1.
ELLE: We’ve seen stylist shows before, but how did yours come about?
June Ambrose: I started doing a lot of these guerilla-style YouTube [videos] where I was basically going undercover as a fashionista in stores and I would get kicked out because they didn’t want you to tape. It started really catching on, and some of them went viral. But before that, I was doing a lot of TV appearances as a style expert. I was reoccurring on Regis and Kelly, and I did Oprah, the Today Show, Good Morning America, and Extreme Home Makeover.
ELLE: Are you tempted to edit yourself for the camera on your show?
JA: You don’t want to edit yourself too much—you want to be authentic. I’m not afraid to look ugly. I have my empty, bizarre expressions, and I’m not guarded in that way. I’m okay with that. In life, we make mistakes, and it’s great TV when you’re just so uninhibited.
ELLE: What other TV shows do you watch?
JA: I don’t get to watch a lot of TV, unfortunately. Even when I’m styling I don’t like to draw references from other artists unless it’s something from the past. If it’s something from the present it stunts you creatively because you’re so busy chasing someone else’s dream as opposed to your own.
ELLE: What’s your relationship like with the show’s producers?
JA: We are very honest with each other. We leave egos at the door. For me it’s my first show, and I’m going to trust the experts to do their part and I am going to expect you to trust me to do my part. I’m going to give you good TV as long as you promise to uphold the integrity of my brand and make this look bigger, better, richer, and sexier. I’m not holding the camera, and I’m not editing the shots, but I am expecting that you get what you need to make me look great and the people around me to shine. I want everyone to walk away feeling like this is great for everyone!
