Last evening, Macy’s celebrated their collaboration with stylist to the stars Kate Young, who acted as editor-at-large for the department store’s spring 2012 INC catalogue. ”Macy’s is an American institution, it’s like Coca Cola—I don’t know one American who doesn’t know what the store is. This is such an honor,” Young enthused over cocktails at the event which was held at Le Bain (though in this case the club’s storied hot tub was covered/censored—whichever you prefer—in a carpeted platform).
Clad in an INC collection leather jacket, Young explained that she styled the catalogue’s looks from the perspective of a rockstar’s wife. “When I go out it’s nice to wear a slutty and short tight dress, they do a really great job of it,” she candidly said of a few looks, comprised of spot-tie-dyed ruched mini’s.
While a celebration held in your honor (at The Standard no less) is quite the feat, it was impossible not to ask Young about the other great task at hand: dressing her notable clients—Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman—for awards season. Both both make appearances at this weekend’s SAG awards and of course, next month’s Oscars. We asked if Williams’ best actress nominations for My Week with Marilyn upped the ante for any outfits-to-be, but Young resigned, “For me it doesn’t really change things, I still want them to feel more beautiful than anyone, I’m so nervous just being here so I can’t imagine what [my clients] feel like with all of those eyes turned to them. If I can help boost their confidence even a little bit, I’m doing my job.”
