Manolo Blahnik for J. Crew? Not so fast. Just two months after Blahnik’s signature $595 BB pumps appeared on the feet of J. Crew models at the retailer’s fall presentation in exclusive J. Crew prints (causing a flurry of online reports and anticipation, the footwear company reveals the collab will not see the sales floor. Citing “wholesale production restraints,” a publicist for Blahnik confirmed the news to ELLE.
“J.Crew was one of the most exciting shows during Fashion Week and we were thrilled to be part of it,” Blahnik president George Malkemus offered via his publicist. Although we were looking forward to the potential collaboration between our two brands, we both came to the conclusion that fall wasn’t the right time. We hope to do something together in the future.”
Jenna Lyons, J. Crew’s president and executive creative director (and universal girl crush), added: “We have a mutual admiration for each other and while we couldn’t do this for fall, we hope to collaborate in the future.”
While unfortunate, the snag is not entirely unexpected. Blahnik has spoken out about his aversion to fast fashion in the past and even revealed to British Vogue in late February that reports of the J. Crew partnership were exaggerated, explaining, “…I sent [J. Crew] over 45 pairs of shoes, and they announced we were doing a collaboration. I had no idea about it!”
So, will the cobbler and the catalogue find a way to make it work down the road? Girls, cross your toes.
