After starting off the weekend on an unexpectedly cold, rainy note, Coachella fans were rewarded with sun and seasonably scorching temperatures on Saturday, April 14th, and Mulberry celebrated accordingly. Creative Director Emma Hill welcomed a festive, fashionable crowd to the Gene Autry House pool at the Jonathan Adler-designed, whimsical-meets-mod Parker Palm Springs hotel for a barbeque in honor of the designer’s Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, inspired by the classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are (as well as Spike Jonze’s modern interpretation).
The pool pavilion took on a creatively chic life of its own, with sun beds featuring Mulberry monster fur print cushions, giant monster lilos floating in the water, and white Fujifilm Instax Mini Instant Film cameras on every poolside table, prompting partygoers to get in touch with their inner artistes! A DJ set from British band Metronomy and a live performance by Wild Belle, the Chicago-based brother and sister Indie pop duo, provided an inimitable ambiance with enough energy to stir up excitement for the rest of the weekend’s shows.
For Emma Watson, in Palm Springs on a break from school at Oxford, Sunday’s lineup held the most promise with her favorites, Laura Marling and Florence and The Machine. In looks from Mulberry’s AW12 collection, Watson joined guests including Kate Bosworth and beau Michael Polish, Harley Viera-Newton, Lily Collins, and Dree Hemingway as they mingled with friends and enjoyed chicken, shrimp and vegetable kebabs on the grill, Mr. Parker’s Salads, and specialty cocktails under the crystalline desert sun.
Navigating around a life-sized chessboard at the pavilion’s exit made for a memorable departure in keeping with the fete’s fantastical theme.
