The video for Rihanna’s latest single, You Da One, premiered today, and it’s classic Ri-Ri: moody, sexy, and overflowing with fashion. The three-and-a-half minute clip, all shot in black and white, is like Where’s Waldo for the style set—it’s impossible to sit through the reggae-inflected song without identifying a runway inspiration in each ensemble.
There’s the fishnet jacket and leggings that reminds us of the wide mesh dress, skirt, and sculpted top shown on the Balenciaga fall ’11 runway. In Paris, they were worn over white, whereas the Barbadian singer paired hers with just a black bandeau—the same shape we saw at Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace in Milan during the spring ’12 shows.
Tabloids have been busy this morning pointing out that Rihanna is wearing a flesh-colored leotard, but what caught our eye was that the polka dots projected onto her body were quite similar to the ones covering just about everything on Marc Jacobs’ fall runway (Stella McCartney’s body-hugging cut-out dress is a fine real-life interpretation of the look, if you can track one down).
Then there is the pair of leather overalls that the singer wears, mostly in shots where she’s grabbing her crotch (It was actually hard to find a still where she wasn’t all up in herself). Could it be the same Chloe pair that Emma Stone wore in her recent spread for ELLE? Not quite, but pretty close. We could go on and on: There are the House of Harlow-esque oversize sunglasses, the Martin Margiela-inspired yeti jacket, and the Dolce & Gabbana bowler hat. Have we missed anything?
