Understatement of 2011: Sky Ferreira caused a scene. With a perfected pout, a killer blonde mane of disheveled curls and a not-so-innocent gaze, the 18-year-old scored a slew of international fashion magazine spreads (including ELLE!) and yes, that is her smirking on billboards across downtown Manhattan amid a sea of Steven Meisel-shot models for CK One.
You’d be remiss to mistake the budding provocateur as just another here today, gone in three months, NYFW front-row-sitting it-girl. With 2011′s much lauded electro-pop heavy EP, As If!, under her power pop dynamo belt, Ferreira’s been quietly working away at her full-length debut. On the eve of her biggest year yet, we checked in with Ferreira to chat about her majorly buzzed-about new tunes
ELLE: All you want for Christmas is…
Sky Ferreira: For the weather in New York City to be over 50 degrees.
ELLE: What’s your best kept staying-warm-in-NYC secret?
SF: My leather jacket. It has a sheep skin lining and I just layer it with a sweatshirt and I’m ready to go. I don’t have to look like Randy from A Christmas Story…
ELLE: What can you tell us about the LP you’re working on?
SF: I’m releasing a single this winter. I’ve been writing with my boyfriend Nick, who’s in the Virgins, for the past year or two. I’m working with Jon Brion [ed note: major Fiona Apple producer] in the new year and possibly recording with Shirley Manson and Greg Kurstin. I’ve been working with Greg since I was like, 15-years-old. This recording process is about making good music and collaboration. All of the people I’m working with believe in what I’m doing and it really makes a difference. I’ve made about 5 debut albums at this point, but this one is where my heart is truly at… and no label set backs!
ELLE: Any fun plans to ring in the New Year?
SF: Last year I didn’t go out on New Years’ Eve. I tend to get social anxiety/anxiety attacks so I kind of avoid it. I’ll celebrate 4th of July, Halloween, and New Years’ Eve a few days before or after when it’s not so overwhelming.
ELLE: What was your most horrifying NYE memory?
SF: Being trapped in Downtown LA and my friend’s brother shoving his tongue down my throat. Same year, obviously.
ELLE: What’s a dream musical collaboration you’d like to see in 2012?
SF: You know, I have NO idea. I’d like to see Fiona Apple starring in a movie directed by Quentin Tarantino or something. She’s so beautiful and I think she could be really funny. Obviously he’s amazing and I think that car-washing scene in Pulp Fiction is one of the funniest scenes in film history… besides the Weird Science bar scene of course.
ELLE: I know you’re a bit of a pop culture junkie. Do you have a favorite pop culture obsession of 2011?
SF: Courtney Stodden is probably my favorite. I want to do a music video of us at a water park and getting in a cat fight in the lazy river. Lots of weave pulling and Courtney would pour her Big Gulp on top of my head.
ELLE: And a personal highlight for you in 2011?
SF: Singing “If You Could Read My Mind” with Mario Testino at his anniversary party. It was so sweet.
