PARIS—Though a Paul McCartney sighting’s guaranteed at every Stella McCartney runway show, the stars sitting next to him are always a surprise, as is the superstar model taking a turn for her designer friend.
For fall 2012, held this morning at the Hotel de Ville, the star was Alicia Keys and the model Natalia Vodianova. The former walked up the grand staircase in the slimming black and white dress that’s quickly become McCartney’s signature. “What is this place?” she asked. “It’s gorgeous!” The latter opened and closed the show to Die Antwoord’s “I Fink U Freeky,” less than 24 hours after running half of yesterday’s Paris marathon.
As for the clothes, McCartney made her mostly black, white and tweed palette pop with bursts of purple, pink and royal blue. Where other designers use peplums, she exaggerated hips with structured jackets and knits. The last string of dresses, ice skater-like silhouettes with panels of neoprene and tweed, were the perfect combination of spring’s flirty surfer and fall’s classic English girl—especially when topped off with blue mascara and an over-sized clutch.
