Hillary Kerr, one of the co-founders of the West Coast-based site, Who What Wear, is an NYU Journalism alum (she also holds a degree from USC) and an expert on celebrity style. Whenever we need to find out what Sienna Miller was wearing while walking her pup or what a-line skirt Jessica Alba was wearing in Malibu, we check with Kerr—she always has the answers. Here, she tells us about taming tigers, flirting with inappropriate men, and her most coveted Jason Wu frock.
ELLE: What is your favorite smell?
HK: It’s a tie between clean laundry and suntan oil.
ELLE: What do you consider the epitome of happiness?
HK: If I want quiet happiness, it’s being poolside or on the beach somewhere sunny with a stack of books and magazines, good music, and someone to bring me snacks. My phone/email doesn’t work in this scenario–that’s critical. If I want energized happiness, it’s being with my BFF Kelly, ideally on a roadtrip somewhere random. We’ve been friends since kindergarten and I have more fun with Kelly than I do with anyone else.
ELLE: How do you define luxury?
HK: Freedom. Time. Anything custom-made. A driver during NYFW…
ELLE: What is the last dream you remember?
HK: I remember my dreams all the time! I just had the most vivid dream about taming an oversized tiger and getting to ride it down the street, of all things.
ELLE: What’s your favorite childhood memory?
HK: Family trips to Hawaii and going snorkeling at y with my parents. That and playing on the Slip ‘n Slide with my friends in our backyard. Man, I loved that thing.
ELLE: What’s the last book you read and loved?
HK: I’m always reading multiple books simultaneously, so I have more than one! Recent loves include Tom Perrotta’s The Leftovers, Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, and Judith Kramtz’s autobiography Sex And Shopping, the latter of which came via a Twitter recommendation from The Fug Girls.
ELLE: Describe your home’s aesthetic.
HK: Colorful Hollywood Regency meets eclectic vintage, accessorized with books galore.
ELLE: What are your vices?
HK: Expensive champagne and flirting with inappropriate men.
ELLE: Describe yourself in 5 words or less.
HK: Punny, pithy, perky, loves Pomeranians
ELLE: What possession will you never throw away?
HK: The blue Jason Wu dress I wore to our Los Angeles book launch party for What To Wear, Where this past spring. It’s amazing, totally timeless, and represents one of the best nights of my life.
