This past season, during Paris Fashion Week, the New York Times‘ Eric Wilson wrote a hilarious report on his attempts to cover Kanye West’s sophomore collection. The paper’s lead critic, Cathy Horyn, didn’t offer her thoughts on the rapper, but now that West is dating Kim Kardashian she’s jumping into the fray. “Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have reportedly hooked up,” Horyn wrote yesterday in the Times. “That bombshell may finally ignite Mr. West’s fashion career, though it means the rest of us will have to hear from him what a design innovator he is and why he doesn’t get enough respect, as I heard myself one evening last fall in Paris.”
Is Horyn suggesting that West simply lacked a muse? Or that being stocked at Dash will help him gain exposure? That his designs, though priced quite high, simply need the kind of ubiquity that only a Kardashian can provide? Maybe. But for someone who’s only produced two fashion collections, his fashion career’s already been ‘ignited,’ gaining an unprecedented amount of attention from both the fashion industry and loyal fans of his music. Whether or not a Kardashian’s the right ingredient for a slow and steady burn, however, is still up for debate.
