In the world of high fashion swimwear, there are two major players. If you want something sporty sexy, there’s Lisa Marie Fernandez, if you something a bit trendier, with lots of color, there’s Zimmerman. The Australian brand’s cultivated a huge stateside following even without physical boutiques. Last year, they opened up shop in LA and today, they’re finally putting down roots in New York. Their new shop, at 87 Mercer Street, is bright and airy, anchored by a custom made sculpture by Confetti Systems in the center of the store. “It’s the same architect we’ve been working with for nearly 16 years,” said Simone Zimmerman, by way of explaining the store’s natural layout.
Simone, together with her sister Nicky, co-founded the line of swimwear in 1991. Since then, they’ve added ready-to-wear, shoes and bags, all of which can best be described as “lazy sexy.” Each dress is more gorgeous than the next, made of creamy lace or brightly printed silk, ready to throw over a swimsuit or wear out to dinner. Though the store will stock the whole collection in lieu of anything one-of-a-kind, it gives shoppers the chance to try on dozens of items previously available online only, and also sells jewelry from fellow Aussies like Mania Mania and Sabrina Dehoff.
The store opens today.
