One of the many perks of winning a CFDA award—aside from the money and the mentoring—is getting the chance to design a few pieces for J.Crew (until last year, it was Gap).
This time around, Joseph Altuzarra, Pamela Love and Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters of Creatures of the Wind (the first of whom won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in December; the other two were named runners up), have had the opportunity to whip up capsule collections of clothing and accessories that marry their own aesthetic with J.Crew’s. Last year, that meant khaki tuxedo pants from Prabal Gurung and spiked bow jewelry from Eddie Borgo. (And prices were similar to J.Crew’s Collection.)
Last night, Altuzarra confirmed that the collections will launch in a few weeks, both online and in J.Crew stores. “It was a really interesting project because it was like a conflation of their language—or of their world—[and] of our world and putting it together,” he told Fashionista. “That was really interesting for me to work on.”
It’s hard to imagine Altuzarra designing for the masses, still harder to think of Creatures of the Wind‘s structural, almost avant-garde designs fitting in amongst J.Crew’s bright spring collection, but that’s probably what makes it fun for the designer, not to mention the legions of customers looking to scoop up their favorite brands.
